Stair
Architect
Structural computation for vertical circulation. Calculates stringer geometry, riser distribution, and architectural clearance with mathematical precision.
Structural Parameters
Building Codes
Standard US residential codes: Risers Max 7.75" (19.7cm), Treads Min 10" (25.4cm). Always verify with local municipal regulations.
Drafting Utility
Total Rise (H) must be measured from finished floor levels to account for surface thicknesses.

What Is a Stair Calculator, Really?
A stair calculator answers the question that every builder, architect, and DIYer asks before cutting a single stringer: "Given the total height (rise) and available horizontal space (run), how many steps do I need, and what should the rise and run of each step be to meet building codes?"
The Ideal Ratio: Blondel's Rule predicts comfort through the formula: 2R + T = 24 to 25 inches (where R is rise and T is tread depth).
"Always measure from finished floor to finished floor. Ignoring subfloor or flooring thickness is the #1 cause of 'trip-steps' at the top or bottom of a flight."
Structural Terminology
| Anatomical Component | Definition | IRC Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Total Rise | Vertical distance floor-to-floor | Architectural Limit |
| Riser Height | Vertical height of each step | Max 7-3/4" (7.75") |
| Tread Depth | Horizontal depth (nose to nose) | Min 10" |
| Headroom | Vertical clearance above stairs | Min 6'8" (80") |
Engineering Formulas
Riser Quantification
Recalculate exact rise by dividing total height by the rounded number of risers.
Stringer Hypotenuse
Determines the diagonal Support board length before layout marking.
Stair Sizing Scenarios
Scenario A: Deck Stairs
Rise = 36". If using 5 risers (7.2" each), tread depth is 12". This is optimal and compliant.
Scenario B: Basement Space
Rise = 106". At 15 risers (7.067"), you need 140" of run to meet the 10" tread minimum.

Layout Checklist
- Measure finished floor-to-floor
- Account for nosing overhang
- Verify headroom path
- Calc stringer lumber (2x12 std)
Structural Faults
The N-1 Rule
Forgetting that tread count is usually one less than riser count for floor transitions.
Headroom Oversight
Cutting stringers before verifying vertical clearance of at least 80 inches.
